Frequently Asked Questions

Do your themes include a print CSS style?

Yes, a print CSS file is included, which sets the site to only print the main content area when a visitors prints from your site, disabling additional Drupal regions.

Which browsers are your themes guaranteed to work in?

Our themes are thoroughly tested in Firefox 3 (Mac/Win/Linux), Internet Explorer 6/7, Safari 3 (Mac), and Opera 9. While nothing can ever promise to be bug-free, we’ve put the themes through their paces in these browsers and made sure to stick to standards-compliant coding techniques in order to ensure they are very cross-browser friendly.

Do your themes work with Views?

Yes. Views is a Drupal module which is a query builder (allows you to easily create custom listings of your content, like a page of all nodes tagged with “quick tips” or a block with the latest blog comments) that is the backbone of most Drupal sites. Because this module is so important for building Drupal sites, we’ve created our themes to display pages and blocks created with Views in a nicely styled way.

However, Views is a module of infinite possibilities, so this doesn’t mean that our themes are crafted to work with every kind of view or content. We’ve tried to be as smart as possible about how we implement the styling in our themes to give you the best look and feel for your site. Our themes have been tested with the blocks that come with the Views module, as well as many other Views blocks and pages of varying types that we have created.

Are your themes SEO-friendly?

Yes! We start out by creating clean, standards compliant code, and using HTML tags properly with semantic naming. Header tags and page titles are also optimized. In all Drupal 6 themes there is a section in the settings for improving your site’s SEO even further. You can control the page titles of your front page and content pages, and even the meta description (although we’d recommend the excellent Meta Tags module for the latter). We’d recommend you set your front page to be a combination of your site name, slogan, and/or mission, whichever of these is most optimized for your main keywords. Content pages are best as set to Page Title followed by Site Name.

Do I get the stock images and Photoshop files with my theme purchase?

Yes. We have appropriately licensed stock graphics/photos as seen in our previews so that you may use them on your website. However, you cannot use the stock images for any other purpose—such as a banner ad or brochure—without purchasing a license for this.

All Photoshop files (usually 2-3) are included with your theme so you can make additional modifications if you’d like.

What do the "types of site" refer to? Does an information site theme work for a media site?

We’ve tried to help you by tagging our themes as the type of site that they will work best for. Some are simpler designs that work best for large amounts of text content. Most importantly, we’ve also geared the theme styling towards certain modules and features. A social/community site theme will pay special attention to things like comments and user profiles, while a blog/news or information site will have more options for navigation. Also, e-commerce themes have extensive Ubercart theming for building online stores.

In the future, we will be highlighting additional site recipes (groups of modules and settings) that will help you build a more feature-rich site of a certain type, like a magazine site, and our themes for that type will include special theming for these features.

In practice, any of our theme types will work for any style of Drupal site. You can use an e-commerce theme for your news site, or a media theme for your community site. It’s just to indicate focus, not compatibility. However, if you need additional features themed in the same style for your site, please contact us for customizations!

Do your e-commerce themes work with the Drupal e-Commerce module?

We theme for the Ubercart module, not e-Commerce. That said, any of our themes should look acceptable with the e-Commerce (and any other) module, but you won’t get the custom Ubercart-tailored catalog and product pages you see on our site. Contact us if you’re interested in additional theming for e-Commerce.

What's included with an e-commerce theme?

Themes tagged as “e-commerce themes” are designed to be used with the Drupal suite of modules called Ubercart. They have additional theming for your catalog, shopping cart, product views, blocks, product pages, and checkout screens. They will still work fine with a non-ecommerce Drupal site, but have these extra features included.

What kind of file do I get my theme as?

Your theme download is packaged as a .tar.gz file, also known as a “tarball” in geeky circles, which is the format Drupal and its modules and themes are usually distributed in. It is similar to a .zip archive and can be opened with most “unzip” programs, such as the free 7-Zip on Windows or StuffIt Expander on Mac OS. This file contains several directories, including the Drupal 5/6 versions of the theme, source images, stock photos, and documentation.

You’ll get a link to download this package immediately after payment, as well as the same link in an email and your user account on our site.

What if I want to buy a theme that doesn't work for the version of Drupal that I'm using?

All of the Drupal 5 themes you see on our site will be eventually upgraded to Drupal 6. If you’re in a hurry for one, drop us a line and we’ll see what we can do.

We do not plan to backport any more of our Drupal 6-only themes to Drupal 5, so any requests to do so would be as a custom job at our hourly rate (usually it takes about 4-6 hours to do this, not including the theme settings).

How quickly will I be able to download and use my theme?

As quickly as your internet connection allows! Your theme is downloadable immediately after purchase. If you have your Drupal site already set up, you can have your new theme up and running in minutes. We have included detailed instructions with your theme, which are also available in our handbook.

Do you have Drupal 6 themes?

Yes! Drupal 6 introduced many exciting changes for theming, and all our themes will need to be overhauled with a new base in order to be converted to Drupal 6, with many new features. Our first Drupal 6 themes came out in August 2008, and the remaining themes will be upgraded over the coming weeks.

Drupal 6 is the latest version but is not yet feasible for some websites since several third-party modules have not yet been upgraded. Make sure that you evaluate your particular site’s needs before deciding which version of Drupal to go with.

Remember that buying a Drupal 5 theme from us today means that you will get a free upgrade to the Drupal 6 version, so your investment in Drupal 5 today is protected.

Can I see what a theme looks like on a live website before I buy it?

We provide numerous screenshots of how your theme will look with various types of content and layouts, but you cannot preview it on a live website at this time. If there is anything you’re curious about, such as how the theme would work with a particular module or screen resolution, feel free to ask! If you’d like to see the quality of our themes under the hood, check out one of our free themes released for Acquia, Marina.

We also have a selection of showcase sites from our existing customers and may be able to provide links showing a particular theme if you let us know.

What exactly is a "buyout" purchase?

A buyout purchase means that your theme will be removed from our website, and cannot be purchased by anyone else after you. This does not affect anyone who may have purchased the theme before you, and they can continue to use it. You can guarantee a 100% unique theme by purchasing the buyout version while the theme still has zero downloads. Your theme will never again be used for another website. We offer these two options so that you have a choice between getting a high quality theme at an incredibly low price in exchange for a few others using it too, or buying it outright and ensuring it is unique to your site. You can choose whatever is right for you or your business!

Can I buy a theme now and download it later?

Yep. Once you’ve purchased a theme, you can always come back and download it later. Your theme does not expire.

Can I download a theme more than once? For how long?

You can download it as many times as you need. We’ll keep all your previous purchases in your account for you. Note that as we make improvements and upgrades to a theme, it may be replaced with a newer, better version. We will notify you if this happens.

I don't like my theme. Can I get a refund?

We believe in our themes and stand behind our work. If you aren’t happy with the theme you’ve purchased from us, let us know within 120 days and we’ll give you a refund. Please tell us if there’s anything we can do to keep your business. If there is an issue with a theme, we’ll fix it asap!

How do I install my theme?

Installation instructions are included with your theme download, plus you’ll get our 24 page step-by-step guide for adding your theme and building your Drupal site.

How do I upgrade my theme?

When a new version of your theme is released, we’ll send you an email. You can then download the updated version by logging in and clicking on the Files tab.

Download and unpack the files as you did when you first installed the theme. Simply upload the new theme files over top of your old files.
If you made any changes to the theme, please make a note of these before you overwrite your previous files. Then clear cached data at admin/settings/performance.

What kind of support is included with my theme purchase?

All our themes include documentation, helping you through the process of uploading and enabling your theme. They also include help for customizing parts of a theme to your liking. Take a look at our Quickstart Guide to see how easy it is, especially if you’re building your first Drupal website. You can also check out the rest of our FAQ and our handbook section for more help on your theme and using Drupal.

Purchasing a theme gets you support and lifetime bug fixes and upgrades, directly from the expert team who created the theme. It does not include any kind of customizations (modifications or enhancements specifically for your site or additional modules), but please contact our technical support if you have any problems or questions that our documentation hasn’t been able to answer.

How do I get my Ubercart store looking like your screenshots?

Due to lots of customer questions about this, check out our huge, 29-page illustrated guide to setting up your Ubercart store!

How do I enable drop-down menus in my theme?

If your theme has drop-down menus (it will say so on the theme’s description on our site), you can enable them by setting some items as child items in your primary menu, and then setting the parent item as Expanded.

How do I get menus to show up in my theme?

Our themes make use of Drupal’s primary and secondary links features for your main navigation, as well as blocks in sidebar and other regions. You can add these at Site building > Menus. You may want to take a look at our quickstart guides which cover using menus and blocks.

Do your themes work as an administration theme?

Yes, but we don’t recommend it. TNT themes are more graphical and feature-rich than others out there, and while we’ve tested to make sure most functionality works fine even with our theme enabled, we made the choice to not sacrifice your site’s front end for administrative flexibility. Drupal’s administration section has very different needs and content, and we’d strongly recommend that you set a different admin theme, such as Garland, so that the front end design doesn’t get in the way of your site configuration tasks!

What happens if I upgrade to a new version of Drupal?

We currently offer themes for Drupal 5 and Drupal 6. One of Drupal’s core philosophies is that it does not guarantee backwards compatibility from one major release to the next. This is ultimately a good thing, as it keeps Drupal lean, versatile, and fast. The downside is that most modules and themes need to be upgraded from version to version. We do create all our themes with the next version of Drupal in mind though, using future-thinking techniques as much as possible.

Whenever an existing TNT theme is upgraded to a new version of Drupal, any past purchasers of that theme will get the upgraded theme for free, for life!

I found a problem with my theme. What now?

Drupal is flexible and fluid, and it is inevitable that occasional issues will arise with implementing your theme.  Please contact us with as much detail as possible, including:

  • Your name and contact info
  • The theme name
  • The browser, operating system, Drupal version, and additional modules you may be using
  • A description of the behaviour you are experiencing
  • Best of all: give us a screenshot and/or link to the issue

We’ll get back to you ASAP to help out!

Please note that your purchase does not include any customization, installation assistance, or troubleshooting of problems that are occurring outside of a default configuration of Drupal and any modules explicitly supported by your theme.

What kinds of settings are available in themes?

Lots! The full list (with screenshots) is here, but here's a sampling:
- Site name, slogan, logo, favicon, user avatars in posts and comments
- Breadcrumbs
- Search results
- Author/date byline
- Taxonomy terms
- Read more and comment text links
- Page titles
- Meta tags

Can I edit the graphics files that come with themes?

The full mockups (the image files from graphic designers that we used to create the themes) are included as layered Photoshop .PSD files in your theme download. This means that you can edit, slice, and tweak any portion of the design and included graphics. For example, you may want to change button colors, integrate your own images into the banner area, or create other custom graphics based on the same design elements.

If you don't have Photoshop, we've also included flattened .PNG files for your reference that any basic graphics program should be able to open. You may also be able to edit the Photoshop files in The GIMP or Paintshop Pro, but we've had varying levels of success with these programs reading them correctly.

How do I make changes to my theme?

Your (Drupal 6) theme comes with a file called local_sample.css. By putting your custom changes in this file, your changes will not be overwritten when upgrading to a new version of this theme.
Steps to activate local.css:
1. Add your custom CSS overrides to the local_sample.css file
2. Rename this file to local.css
3. Uncomment (remove leading semicolon from) the following line in your theme’s .info file:
;stylesheets[all][] = local.css
4. Clear cached data at admin/settings/performance
This blog post covers how to make a simple change to your theme, such as updating a color.

What if I want you to customize something in a theme?

Depending on your requirements, we may be available for hire to do custom Drupal theme development and enhancements of themes purchased here. Please contact us for further details. We are pros who do nothing but Drupal theming, and have wide experience in creating themes for both small businesses and large, international organizations.

Do you do custom designs or themes?

Yep. Check out our portfolio of custom design and Drupal theme development. Please contact us for more details.

Can I use a theme on multiple websites?

With the regular purchase of a theme, no. With a buyout purchase, you can use the theme on any number of websites, and it will be removed from our site and no longer sold.

Multi-site license: We have also begun to offer a multi-site license for developers, or unlimited use of any one (or more) of our themes. For 2.5-5 times the price of a regular license, you can purchase a license to use the theme on multiple websites, or use it in a custom hosted service or application which generates multiple websites. Under this license, the theme will not be removed from our site, and cannot be resold by you. This option is not yet purchasable directly through our website, but please send us an email with your specific needs and we can invoice you directly for the correct amount.

What kinds of files and formats are used in a theme?

You’ll find several file types within our themes:

  • .php files - these are the backbone of a Drupal theme, and tell your website what to display where. Our themes will have at least a template.php, page.tpl.php, and node.tpl.php file. Many have more, for more targeted theming of specific sections.
  • .css files - these are style sheet files, which control the visual look and feel of your web site. This is where all the magic of beautiful designs happen.
  • Image files - these will end in .gif, .jpg, or .png, depending on the type of image. They are optimized for a balance of fast load times and prettiness.
  • .js files - these are JavaScript, and will add some additional functionality and whiz-bang display features to your theme.
Can I redistribute a theme from TopNotchThemes?

No. This isn’t all of the story, but the simple answer is that no, you can not legally distribute, sell, or use a full theme you purchase from TopNotchThemes on more than one website (without purchasing a new copy for each site). The details of this are a little more complicated - it actually depends on the specific files you’re asking about. A theme is made up of several files - template files (ending in .php), CSS, images and JavaScript. The template files are considered a part of Drupal, which is licensed under the GPL, which means they are not restricted in their redistribution. You are free to share the .php documentation and blog so others can benefit from them. However, the rest of the theme - images, CSS and JavaScript - is independent from Drupal and owned by us and licensed by you for one website per purchase. You may not publish or share these parts of the themes with anyone else. Please review our EULA for full details.

Do you have themes available for any other CMSes?

Nope. We live and breathe Drupal. We, the founders of TopNotchThemes.com, have used several other content management systems over the years and found them lacking compared to Drupal.

What kind of technical support do you provide?

We’re happy to help any of our customers with questions or issues you have with a theme via email or phone. Please contact us and someone will get back to you shortly.

Do you have any free themes?

Yes, we have been developing themes in conjunction with Acquia for their distribution of Drupal. A second one is on the way. You can get it with the download at http://acquia.com or from http://drupal.org/project/acquia_marina

I'm not very technically savvy – will I be able to set up Drupal myself?

Yes! Please take a look at our quickstart guides to see how easy it is to install your theme and configure Drupal for the first time. Our guide will walk you through creating content, adding blocks to your site, and configuring the settings for the theme. All of the content and configuration you see in our theme screenshots were created without any programming.

If you need help installing Drupal, this is a great how-to video that shows you how to FTP your files and create the database. We also highly recommend the book Using Drupal for new Drupal site builders.
