Frequently asked questions
- Will TopNotchThemes be identified anywhere on my site?
Definitely not. We do not place our name on your site.
- Do you have themes available for any other CMSes?
Nope. We live and breathe Drupal. We, the founders of TopNotchThemes.com, have used several other content management systems over the years and found them lacking compared to Drupal.
- Are your themes SEO-friendly?
Yes, this is something we build into all our themes. Make sure you enable clean URL's, and check out some of our resources on SEO. Our themes are a great foundation for optimizing your site for search engine results. Things like header tags and page titles have been tweaked in all our themes to get the best SEO performance.
- Are your themes standards compliant?
Yes, absolutely. All our themes are held to the HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS standards, pass Level 2 accessibility tests, and contain well-formed markup in an easy to read fashion.
- Which browsers are your themes guaranteed to work in?
Our themes are thoroughly tested in Firefox 2 (Mac/Win/Linux), Internet Explorer 6/7, Safari 2/3 (Mac/Win), and Opera 9. While nothing can ever promise to be bug-free, we've put the themes through their paces in these browsers and made sure to stick to standards-compliant coding techniques in order to ensure they are very cross-browser friendly.
- Do you have Drupal 6 themes?
No, but we will! Drupal 6 introduced many exciting changes for theming, and all our themes will need to be overhauled with a new base in order to be converted to Drupal 6. We plan on doing this for many of our themes (as well as for new themes) in late Spring 2008.
As of the present time (March 2008), Drupal 6 is the latest version but is not yet feasible for many websites since several key third-party modules have not yet been upgraded. Unless you are developing a very simple blog/brochure website, or multilingual site (which is another area that was vastly improved for Drupal 6), we recommend that you stick with Drupal 5 if you are starting to build a site right now.
Remember that buying a Drupal 5 theme from us today means that you will get a free upgrade to the Drupal 6 version, so your investment in Drupal 5 today is protected.
- Will your theme work on non-English websites?
If you are looking for a right-to-left or bidirectional (bidi) theme, this is a top priority for us in Spring 2008. For left-to-right languages, yes, our themes are created to be flexible and should work great with various languages. If you will be creating a multilingual website, make sure you check out this area of our handbook.
- What if I want you to customize something in a theme?
Depending on your requirements, we may be available for hire to do custom Drupal theme development and enhancements of themes purchased here. Please contact us for further details. We are pros who do nothing but Drupal theming, and have wide experience in creating themes for both small businesses and large, multilingual organizations.
- Can I redistribute a theme from TopNotchThemes?
No. This isn't all of the story, but the simple answer is that no, you can not legally distribute, sell, or use a full theme you purchase from TopNotchThemes on more than one website (without purchasing a new copy for each site). The details of this are a little more complicated - it actually depends on the specific files you're asking about. A theme is made up of several files - template files (ending in .php), CSS, images and JavaScript. The template files are considered a part of Drupal, which is licensed under the GPL, which means they are not restricted in their redistribution. You are free to share the .php documentation and blog so others can benefit from them. However, the rest of the theme - images, CSS and JavaScript - is independent from Drupal and owned by us and licensed by you for one website per purchase. You may not publish or share these parts of the themes with anyone else. Please review our EULA for full details.
- Can I edit a theme I purchase?
Absolutely! We definitely encourage this. You might want to add in a logo, adjust colours, or change the widths or columns in the theme. There are no restrictions on editing your theme. Although, if you do something really cool with it, we'd love for you to share it with us. :)
- What's included with an e-commerce theme?
Themes tagged as "e-commerce themes" are designed to be used with the Drupal suite of modules called Ubercart. They have additional theming for your catalog, shopping cart, product views, blocks, product pages, and checkout screens. They will still work fine with a non-ecommerce Drupal site, but have these extra features included.
- What do the "types of site" refer to? Does an information site theme work for a media site?
We've tried to help you by tagging our themes as the type of site that they will work best for. Some are simpler designs that work best for large amounts of text content. Most importantly, we've also geared the theme styling towards certain modules and features. A social/community site theme will pay special attention to things like comments and user profiles, while a blog/news or information site will have more options for navigation. Also, e-commerce themes have extensive Ubercart theming for building online stores.
In the future, we will be highlighting additional site recipes (groups of modules and settings) that will help you build a more feature-rich site of a certain type, like a magazine site, and our themes for that type will include special theming for these features.
In practice, any of our theme types will work for any style of Drupal site. You can use an e-commerce theme for your news site, or a media theme for your community site. It's just to indicate focus, not compatibility. However, if you need additional features themed in the same style for your site, please contact us for customizations!
- What kinds of files and formats are used in a theme?
You'll find several file types within our themes:
- .php files - these are the backbone of a Drupal theme, and tell your website what to display where. Our themes will have at least a template.php, page.tpl.php, and node.tpl.php file. Many have more, for more targeted theming of specific sections.
- .css files - these are style sheet files, which control the visual look and feel of your web site. This is where all the magic of beautiful designs happen.
- Image files - these will end in .gif, .jpg, or .png, depending on the type of image. They are optimized for a balance of fast load times and prettiness.
- .js files - these are JavaScript, and will add some additional functionality and whiz-bang display features to your theme.
- Can I buy a theme now and download it later?
Yep. Once you've purchased a theme, you can always come back and download it later. Your theme does not expire.
- Can I download a theme more than once? For how long?
You can download it as many times as you need. We'll keep all your previous purchases in your account for you. Note that as we make improvements and upgrades to a theme, it may be replaced with a newer, better version. We will notify you if this happens.
- Why do your prices change?
Our buyout theme pricing is based on the number of previous downloads. As more people purchase a particular theme, the price goes down to reflect the wider distribution of that theme. Our themes' intitial prices also depend on their complexity - the more features/details a theme has, the higher the price.
- What exactly is a "buyout" purchase?
A buyout purchase means that your theme will be removed from our website, and cannot be purchased by anyone else after you. This does not affect anyone who may have purchased the theme before you, and they can continue to use it. You can guarantee a 100% unique theme by purchasing the buyout version while the theme still has zero downloads. Your theme will never again be used for another website. We offer these two options so that you have a choice between getting a high quality theme at an incredibly low price in exchange for a few others using it too, or buying it outright and ensuring it is unique to your site. You can choose whatever is right for you or your business!
- What happens if I upgrade to a new version of Drupal?
As of April 2008, all of our themes are designed for Drupal 5. One of Drupal's core philosophies is that it does not guarantee backwards compatibility from one major release to the next. This is ultimately a good thing, as it keeps Drupal lean, versatile, and fast. The downside is that most modules and themes need to be upgraded from version to version. We do create all our themes with the next version of Drupal in mind though, using future-thinking techniques as much as possible. Whenever an existing theme is upgraded to a new version of Drupal, any past purchasers of that theme will get the upgraded theme for free.
- How quickly will I be able to download and use my theme?
As quickly as your internet connection allows! Your theme is downloadable immediately after purchase. If you have your Drupal site already set up, you can have your new theme up and running in minutes. We have included detailed instructions with your theme, which are also available in our handbook.
- I don't like my theme. Can I get a refund?
We believe in our themes and stand behind our work. If you aren't happy with the theme you've purchased from us, let us know within 90 days and we'll give you a refund. Please tell us if there's anything we can do to keep your business. If there is an issue with a theme, we'll fix it asap!
- Can I see what a theme looks like on a live website before I buy it?
We provide numerous screenshots of how your theme will look with various types of content and layouts, but you cannot preview it on a live website. This is to protect our themes from being copied and widely distributed, thus reducing the value of them to our customers. If there is anything you're curious about, such as how the theme would work with a particular module or screen resolution, feel free to ask.
- Do I get the stock images and Photoshop files with my theme purchase?
Yes. We have appropriately licensed stock graphics/photos as seen in our previews so that you may use them on your website. However, you cannot use the stock images for any other purpose--such as a banner ad or brochure--without purchasing a license for this.
All Photoshop files (usually 2-3) are included with your theme so you can make additional modifications if you'd like.
- What kind of support is included with my theme purchase?
All our themes include plenty of documentation, helping you through the process of uploading and enabling your theme. They also include help for customizing parts of a theme to your liking. You can also check out the rest of our FAQ and our handbook section for more help on your theme and using Drupal. Purchasing a theme from us does not include any kind of customizations, but please contact us if you have any problems or questions that our documentation hasn't been able to answer.
- I found a problem with my theme. What now?
Drupal is flexible and fluid, and it is inevitable that occasional issues will arise with implementing your theme. Please contact us with as much detail as possible, including:
- Your name and contact info
- The theme name
- The browser, operating system, Drupal version, and additional modules you may be using
- A description of the behaviour you are experiencing
- Best of all: give us a screenshot and/or link to the issue
We’ll get back to you ASAP to help out!
Please note that your purchase does not include any customization, installation assistance, or troubleshooting of problems that are occurring outside of a default configuration of Drupal and any modules explicitly supported by your theme.
