It’s been three months now since we released the Acquia Marina theme, a free Drupal theme developed for Acquia’s Drupal distribution and released on drupal.org.  It’s been an amazing ride of feedback so far, and widespread use and testing by the community has made both it and all our themes so much better (and has kept the issue queue very busy, which Jay has done a remarkable job of handling).  For that we send a big THANK YOU to both Acquia and the Drupal community!

3,000 people are using Acquia Marina, according to the usage stats, making it the second most popular contrib theme (after Zen, naturally) on drupal.org!

We’ve come across some great uses of it in the wild and wanted to share a few favourites:

Intelligent Sustainable Energy
A very clean interpretation, changing the blue to grey and a logo to match.  Kudos!

Mommie 911
Wow, Marina with a completely new colour scheme!

EarthShare Washington
There’s not a whole lot of Marina left here, but you can see it — nice job on making it your own and great colours.

Acamdex
This one is my favourite unmodified (as far as I can tell at least) use of Marina.  Great use of the preface regions with the checkmark bullets for key points.

Town of Williston
Ok, this one almost makes me wish we’d done it in grey to start with — simply beautiful!

SpreadThunderbird
Fairly unmodified, but just because it shows how a few small modifications can polish it up for your own needs, like updating the style of the primary link tabs.  And hey, it’s Thunderbird!

Science@Cal
It’s Marina under there somewhere, I swear.  As we’ve seen from numerous comments and sites like this, many people are using Marina as a base to create a completely different theme.

iThinkWorks also made this great showcase post about how the features and flexibility of the theme helped them to launch their new site in under 20 hours for $20.

What’s in store for Acquia Marina

If you’ve got a site in a right-to-left language, we could use your help.  We’d like to release this theme as bidirectional and community testing is needed!

We added a local css file a while back so you can make custom changes but easily upgrade when new versions are released.

We’re also finishing up a handbook section for Marina, to help you with things like the many theme settings included, understanding the collapsible regions and different layouts, and adding your own custom icons to blocks.

I have commented a couple of times on twitter how great Acquia Marina theme is. As a matter of fact, I think this theme is a complete study on how to make great themes for Drupal 6. Great job!

Congratulations!
It's not small thing to have such big success in such big and great community.

Acquia Marina is a great theme!

I have just one complaint: readability.
I know that it is fashionable these days to use gray font on grayish (greenish, ...) background, and it looks perhaps cool, but it is strenuous to read. Also the font could be a tick larger.

Could you please make a Marina version that is as readable as your theme on your own TNT website? You could call it Clear Marina :).

Thank you for consideration!

That's a good idea :) I think we'll be adding some snippets like these (and encouraging others to do so) for the handbook section on Marina! You can then make that change easily in your local.css file and still upgrade the theme.

Here's another.

Acquia Marina was pefect for this site. Easy to implement and very powerful. Thanks.

Roger, that's a great one! Love the colours! Nice job.

Its because Drupal themes are terrible.. and this one happens to be ok

Acquia Marina is by far the best Drupal theme we have come across so far. Clean, well documented, easy to modify and extend. Best of all: it's free. Thanks a lot!

Great job, congratulations!

Thanks again,
Marcus Döring

This is by far the best theme for Drupal I've seen and it is so well put together and easy to work with. We had to roll out a new logo and look as well as switch content management systems in less than a month- I managed the Drupal install and migrated most of our old content but was not going to be able to theme the site from scratch and make deadline. It saved me big time and I we really appreciate the hard work you guys put in on this.

I have been using this theme on a site I have been developing for the local community, http://virtualthatcham.net. A clean and tidy theme which makes navigation easy. Would be nice if the colorwheel could be integrated to alow changes to the base color, but a fantastic theme in any case.

Another site done in Acquia Marina - http://www.accountsportal.com

Online accounting for accountants (and their clients)

Thanks for the theme and support!

Please note, http://virtualthatcham.net has now been superceeded and the replacement no longer uses this theme.

It's such an extensible and beautiful theme! The code is relatively tight, and the design elements are easily customizable as well. Thanks for such a wonderful theme!

It is my preferred theme, to a point I am developing all my sites using it, specially both my primary site and the site for Aelis Mantenimiento Informatico, the small IT business of a friend.
I bet you won't believe any of them are Acquia Marina based, but they are!

Sorry, I forgot to add the link to the second page: http://aelis.es/mantenimiento-informatico

Acquia Marina is awesome! In all reality, everything seems to fit together perfectly. The code is very well written, it validates and is very easy to customize thanks to the clear descriptive headings for each section of the theme. Yeah, it's true, there's not a whole lot of "great" themes for Drupal now, which is really a shame. Joomla! has tons of really, really nice one's, but it's not enough to switch 'cause Drupal walks all over Joomla!
Anyway, thanks God for Top Notch! Acquia, to me, is by far the best available theme for Drupal. I'll post my site as soon as it's finished.

Thanks a million Top Notch... you guys ROCK!

MentorPolis website also uses Marina. Thanks for such a great theme :)

I too am a fan of Acquia Marina. I just recently got into drupal and tried out a few other themes but didn't really find one that i liked until i cam across this one.

This listing of other sites that use the theme is pretty cool, it's interesting to see how others have customized their sites with this theme.
