Showcase of newspaper sites on Drupal at NewsTools2008

Collage of news and magazine sites running Drupal

Members of the Drupal community participated yesterday at a gathering of journalists interested in news+technology. Drupal was showcased as an excellent tool for building news websites. You may have already seen some of the big news/magazine sites out there running Drupal, like The Onion, NY Observer, and Fast Company, but there were a few others that caught my eye.

NWSource, a gorgeous site for the Seattle area.  Couldn’t look less like Drupal.

The Columbia Spectator, a classic news site, very elegant and clearly making great use of Drupal’s content organization tools.

The Vineyard Voice, a community news site, which shows that a little can go a long way when polishing a Drupal site.

Themes for Drupal news websites

We’ve had a lot of interest in journalism-related Drupal themes, for newspaper, magazine, and local community sites.  We’re working on some of these now and would love your input (comment here or give us a shout) if you’re building a news site and could share more about what you are looking for!

Nice collection... I am not building any newspaper / magazine sites but, I do monitor the SitePoint web design feed (http://marketplace.sitepoint.com/categories/templates-for-sale/feed) and I see a lot of newspaper designs flow through there - mostly for WP. But, I would like to see more newspaper / magazine themes on d.o. There seems to be a high interest around the net lately for these types of themes.

Actually building a drupal-based news site now. I started with the zen theme and customized it from there. BUT, what I think a lot of newspapers want is Drupal install that comes bundled with modules and is tweaked (both in workflow and presentation) to use them in a newspaper environment (subscribe to articles, related content, event calendars, geotagging, etc). If someone could produce that module bundle/customization along with a theme that is easily tweaked, there'd be a lot of money. You could probably even sell a service subscription ....

Hmm, actually that's no a bad idea ...

Thanks! I'll keep an eye on that feed, Elvis. WP is used much more for news-y type sites, but Drupal has so much more it can do with layout, and things like nodequeue.

Great input Ken, thanks. We're discussing these kinds of ideas with folks right now. With Drupal, themes and configuration go so hand in hand that it's tough to just offer one or the other.

Have you checked out The Virginian-Pilot's (Norfolk, VA) website -- http://www.pilotonline.com? They are definitely the largest newspaper website I have seen using Drupal.

I just noticed gazette.com sure does look alot like pilotonline.com . Who launched their website first?

The above URL should be gazettenet.com -- my bad

Nice collection of themes.I just looking for some drupal theme for this.Maybe pickup some of those.

i would like to see a news theme with weather, calendar, stock report, news ticker. actually making one with WP but would like to see a theme in drupal

I'm a WP user, but would like to try Drupal...what would I need as a Journalist and News sites developer...

- fronto page photo gallery, rotating headlines, blogs, rating system, VIDEO player, water marks, polls, SIMPLE, CLEAN designs, focused on rich media photos, videos. Social media sharing tools, feeds in /out. membership, build in social network. SELF GENERATING ADS SYSTEM ala Google/Facebook. And last but not least a Facebook connect module. That's all :)
